“It was a Friday like any other. Despite finishing work late still managed to pick up the twins on time from daycare. Once at home, I put the tuna casserole in the oven and turn on the knob to the 325 degree baking setting. A good half an hour passed by and the oven did not reach the bake temperature” Susan said.

She phoned Vancouver Appliance Repair first thing Saturday morning:
“To my surprise the calm and friendly dispatcher not only realized what the problem might had been but she also scheduled a service call for me for the same day”.

“Susan experienced a common problem in a gas oven: a faulty gas igniter. Our technicians are certified to service residential gas appliances and faulty igniters are one of the calls that we are dispatched to service quite often” said Melvin the Vancouver Appliance Repair technician that responded to Susan’s service call.

Melvin explained how the ignition system works:
“ The thermostat will set the desired oven temperature. The igniter located close to the burner begins to glow and once that reaches a certain current potential it activates the gas safety valve. In that moment the gas safety valve allows the gas to flow to the burner. When the igniter is faulty one cannot hear the sound of gas traveling to the burner. You might think you have a gas valve problem but instead what you experience is an ignition issue. It can take 30 to 90 seconds from the initial time of setting the thermostat temperature to the actual gas ignition”.

The Vancouver Appliance Repair gas trained and certified technician will test the oven igniters and check other components as part of the standard service call response. The technician will also inspect: the surface burners, oven door seal and hinges. If any additional service is needed the technician will try to resolve it at once by using the parts from the service vehicle stock in order to avoid a second visit.

Chris suggested a dishwasher inspection list that will help you keep the appliance trouble free for many years to come.

-make sure that your dishwasher was installed according with the installation specifications provided by the manufacturer. Is your dishwasher level? The dishwasher legs can be adjusted for height. Was the drain hose installed properly? The drain hose must be installed with a high loop under before connecting to the sink trap in order to prevent the drain water to return to the dishwasher .Check to make sure that the drain hose was not partially kinked when installed.

-the level, temperature and the chemistry of the water that enters the dishwasher are factors that decides how clean the dishes will be at the end of the cycle .The fill valve if free of debris should bring the level of water inside the dishwasher right under the heating elements. In some dishwashers the temperature of the water to the closest sink should be at least 120F. For other dishwashers the temperature of the water is at no importance. The heating element of the dishwasher will heat up the water to the specified temperature. The hardness of the water varies from a region to another region.

-the water is circulated inside the dishwasher by the re-circulation pump via one or more spray arms. It is important to make sure that no debris is plugging the spray holes of the arms.

-inspect and clean the sump and the sump mesh filter located below the spray arms. Make sure that the mesh filter is locked in place and is not damaged. Otherwise debris can be making its way to the sump and damage the drain pump impeller in some models.

-detergent is another important factor that plays an important role in the cleaning process. Always use the detergent specified in the use and care manual. Use fresh detergent and add as much as is specified. Mixing different types of dish detergents and using more detergent than specified will create a severe over sudsing that will interfere with the proper operation of the appliance.

-use the rinse agent specified by the use and care manual for better cleaning results.

-load the dishwasher so that the big dishes are not in a way of the water jetting created by the spray arms. Do not place large plates in front of the smaller ones so that the water sprayed can reach them.

-Place the silverware in the basket and make sure that long handles do not interfere with the rotation action of the arms.

-inspect periodically the door seal of your dishwasher

Our dishwasher, which has been an important help in our kitchen, has developed lately a certain odor. We have tried using different expensive cleaners but nothing seemed to really work. Melvin suggested a simple solution: white vinegar.

”Start the dishwasher and wait till it fills with water. Do not use any detergent. After the dishwasher stops filling open the door and pour 4 cups of white vinegar. Close the door and run a whole cycle. After draining the dishwasher will stay fresh and clean. You can also use the vinegar in a higher concentration mixed with hot water to remove hard water stains from inside of your dishwasher”

We have followed Melvin’s advice and our dishwasher is now odor free. Thank you for repairing our dishwasher!
